What was almost certainly the biggest crowd – more than 2,000 – ever to see a TSB soccer team in action turned out to watch a charity match between the Birmingham Municipal TSB and the BRMB All Stars (an invitation XI fielded by a local radio station).

The match was started by Miss BMTSB 1977, Karen Mayers, and yielded football both highly entertaining and competitive – and a 1-1 scoreline that justly reflected the sway of the play.

The All Stars team featured some present and past Football League professionals. And it was one of these, former Aston Villa and Birmingham City star Stan Lynn, who missed an early penalty.

The bank team replied more decisively, with a four-man build-up that culminated in a superbly taken goal by the squad’s leading scorer, John Mace (1-0).

But the lead was short lived. Lynn had a second chance at a penalty and this time gave bank ‘keeper Mike Reed no chance (1-1).

And there the score remained, in spite of the fact that, in the final quarter-hour, the All Stars were allowed to boost their strength to 14 players.

The teams left the field to the cheers of the spectators.
