The stairwells no longer have the original balustrades, but are now carpeted.
The tours of the building then continued on the second floor:
After visiting the Assembly Hall (above and left), the groups had access to the Boardroom (below) and the rooftop yard bounded by the Boardroom, the glass roof above the Banking Hall, and the former Caretaker's flat - where group photographs were taken to record the occasion.
The corridor between the Assembly Hall and the Boardroom has a window providing views into the roof space above the Banking Hall - the window incorporates the coat of arms of the University. The motto "Per ardua ad alta" means "Through hardship, great heights are reached".

The tour groups then descended to the Basement area.
Opposite the Safe Deposit entrance, the group examine
the safe that gave access to the Night Safe's internal door (right).
The tour guide explains that the post-Second World War safe deposit blocks have been removed in order that the space may be used for exhibitions. The original, individual safes on the walls of the strongroom have been refurbished and the rear wall (below) has had its motto restored:
PRUDENT PEOPLE SEEK A SAFE PLACE WHEREIN TO LODGE THEIR SECURITIES.
The individual safe doors (left) are open - requiring the appropriate key to be identified and  matched against each of the 10,528 safe locks, a task being undertaken by a University of Birmingham staff member in the old Banking Hall (right).
Three members of staff who worked in the Safe Deposit when it was closed in 1998:
(left to right): Pat Mills; Phil Herriott; Gill Price. The four different sizes of safes can be identified in these two photographs. The accompanying tables compares the rent charged for each size when the facility opened and closed.
