Motoring Club

1972 entrants for R E Gillies Rally

For the first time in 1971, the BMB Motoring Club entered a three-car team in the TSB's national

R E Gillies Rally. This annual rally commenced in 1964, and was originally organised by the Liverpool Savings Bank, with one of their managers (Dick Gillies) donating a trophy for the best team. For the first few years, the teams mainly emanated from the northwest of England and North Wales. The event gradually gained support from most of the country during the 1970s, but it was not until 1979 that the TSB National Sports Council was formed and financial assistance was provided to the organisers.

The 1972 rally was held on September 3rd with a route through the mountains of North Wales. The start and finish of the rally was based on Runcorn in Cheshire and the BMB team finished sixth, with individual placings as follows:

12th: David & Jeanette Parkes (Ford Cortina 1600E);

23rd: Brian Godwin & Steve Pink (Triumph Spitfire);

36th: Bob Timmins & John Curtis (MG)
